Metropolis (1927) is a German expressionist film directed by Fritz Lang, and was one of the first feature-length films of the science-fiction genre. It is set in a futuristic urban dystopia, and depicts the struggles of Freder, heir to the city, and Maria, a poor worker, who fall in love with one another despite insurmountable social barriers. In this scene, Freder fails to rescue Maria as she is kidnapped by the evil scientist Rotwang, who wants to graft her likeness onto his robot.
This soundtrack samples from violin, harmonica, Tibetan singing bowls, kalimba, and a range of small percussion instruments.
